The area had the misfortune of being involved in various military campaigns, resulting in occupation and destruction that forced its inhabitants to vacate the area, leaving it in ruins and ashes.

Nowadays, the Al Ukhdood Archaeological Site is a popular destination for both local and foreign tourists. Embark on the journey through time and explore the ancient city on a full-day adventure, where towering rock tombs are waiting to tell their stories to the explorers.

The Unseen Treasure of Al Ukhdood

The archaeological site is also known as "The Trenches." As you walk through the city, you will sense a rise of strong anticipation within you. This ancient region traces its roots back to 1400 years. Besides, the Holy Quran also mentions events that happened in the region in chapter 85 of Surah Al Burooj. By exploring the Al Ukhdood, tourists can delve deeper into the amazing ancient structures and archaeological marvels carved into the soil of the archaeological city. Strolling through these wonders, one will feel they are being transported back in time.

AlUkhdood Castle

Once tourists set foot in this Archaeological city, they can witness the traces of where the massacre by King Dhul-Nawas took place. The archaeological village is located southwest of Najran. The most important landmark on the historical site is Al Ukhdood Castle, which dates back to 500 BC. The castle is believed to have been built by the Hud civilization, and the castle is listed in UNESCO World Heritage Sites for its unique archaeological structure and intricate carvings.

The fortified city surrounded by the Al Ukhdood castle is a sight to behold. Its rectangular shape spans 235 meters and is surrounded by a sturdy wall, providing a formidable defense against any attackers. The castle has undergone many archaeological excavations that resulted in the discovery of a Mosque dating back to 8AD by the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage. During the excavations, many petroglyphs (rock carvings) dating back to 7,000 BC to 1,000 BC indicated the presence of ancient humans who led life by hunting using spears, sticks, bows, and arrows. Some archaeological artefacts, including ancient coins, pots, and graves, were also discovered.

Nestled in the heart of Najran stands the magnificent Qasr Al-Emara, also referred to as Emarah Palace and Al Ukhdood, which was built in 1942 under Amir Turki Bin Mohammad Al-Mehdi's governate period. The architectural structure of the palace is designed in accordance with the traditional Yemeni mudbrick style, which has a strong archaeological significance. Qasr Al-Emara is surrounded by high square walls with circular towers on all four corners to keep an eye on the enemy activities. The Emara Palace is also home to a mosque and an antique well from pre-Islamic times.
