King Fahad National Library | A Must-Visit Destination

By Funadiq Team

The King Fahad National Library, located in Riyadh, is an exceptional architectural marvel spanning across a vast area of roughly 87,000 square meters. It holds immense significance as a cultural institution in Saudi Arabia and is a testimony to the advancements in urban development within the heart of Riyadh. The library has been a valuable source of knowledge and information for researchers and learners alike, providing them with the best possible resources to fulfill their academic pursuits since its birth.

A cubical-shaped building is the oldest library in the history of Saudi Arabia surrounding an existing marble-clad tower. The unique building is located in the heart of Riyadh's most developed zone which will soon be accessible by a metro station. Visiting the oldest library provides an immersive experience of the rich history of the Kingdom and its culture.

The History of King Fahad National Library

In 1983, the people of Riyadh wanted to express their appreciation to King Fahad, the custodian of two Holy Mosques. To do so, they laid the foundation of a library, which was constructed in 1988. The library building comprises four floors, including the ground floor, which houses the planetarium. The design of the building was inspired by modern Arabic inscriptions and the construction utilized marble. Originally, it was a public library, but later, it transformed into a national library, which underwent several development projects until its present state.

A Unique Cultural Marvel

In 2015, the national library underwent a remarkable development project. The renowned Gerber Architekten team, led by Professor Eckhard Gerber, designed and completed the new project. The primary objective behind the design was to create a structure that showcases the finest of urban development and rearrangement while also keeping the Arabian style in mind. The team faced the challenge of designing a new building while staying within the existing structure. The result was a beautiful and functional national library now open to the public.

The square-shaped building surrounding the old structure covers a large area compared to business blocks in terms of structure and expansion. Thus, presenting the new structure without abandoning the older one, which is nowadays operating as an internal stack. The structure of the building is distinguished by its filigree sun-protection textile structure that illuminates at night, following the traditional Middle Eastern architectural patterns and equipping them with modern technology. The new square building at the center of the city park appears open and airy, blending well with the urban environment despite its size. Designed by Gerber Architekten, the park was created with vast space, including green areas to form a large square. Together with the library, it serves as the focal point of a prestigious urban area important for future growth.
