Unveiling The 5 Most Popular Hiking Trails In Saudi Arabia

By Funadiq Team

Saudi Arabia boasts a variety of trekking trails, offering stunning natural landscapes for hikers and trekkers to explore. From majestic mountains to historical valleys, the diverse terrain of the country provides an ideal setting for both local and global trekkers. Travelers can revel in the scenic beauty of expansive valleys, vast lava fields, and ancient rock engravings while trekking through Saudi Arabia. Additionally, some of these trails allow trekkers to camp at designated spots, further enhancing the experience.

The kingdom of Saudi Arabia caters to hiking enthusiasts of all levels, providing options for both beginners and experts. Prior research is crucial for a safe and enjoyable trek, and to assist in this endeavor, here is a detailed list of some of the best trekking sites in Saudi Arabia:

Al Wahba Crater

One of the most captivating treks in Saudi Arabia is the Al Wahba crater, which spans 6.9 km in diameter and reaches a depth of 780 meters. Formed by a phreatomagmatic eruption, the crater features a vast hollow depression with a lake at its center. The area is renowned for its shimmering white crystals of sodium phosphate, creating a mesmerizing sight when viewed from above. Additionally, a dried lava field can be observed on the northern edge of the crater, making it an ideal location for stargazing.

The trekking spot is located on the western edge of the Hafer Kishb Basalt Plateau, approximately 250 km from Taif and 323 km from Jeddah. There is an elevation loss of around 780 meters in the trek, with the lowest point in the crater being approximately 780 meters. The trek to the bottom of the crater takes around 45-60 minutes, and the upward trek takes 60-90 minutes, depending on individuals' fitness levels.

Edge of the World

Jebel Fihrayn, also known as the Edge of The World, is a 300-meter-high cliff located in the Jebel Tuwaiq Region. While a significant portion of the area can be easily accessed using 4x4 vehicles, the journey to the top of the cliff is a major draw for trekkers from around the world. This geological formation was created by the movement of tectonic plates and is renowned for its breathtaking sunsets and sunrises. The region and escarpment are home to a variety of coral and wood fossils that never fail to captivate trekkers. The trek is divided into two segments: a 15 km journey by vehicle and a 300-meter ascent on foot. Due to the extreme heat in the summer months, the best time to visit Jebel Fihrayn is during the fall and winter, specifically from November to June.

Jebel Tuwaiq is 90 kilometers from Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. The popular cliff of Jebel Fihrayn is located 15 kilometers from the main gate of the valley. The cliff is 300 meters tall and sits on a 685-meter high rift, resulting in a total elevation gain of 985 meters.

Al Ula Mountain Hiking Trail

The Al Ula Mountain hiking trail offers a serene journey through rugged paths flanked by parallel canyons, showcasing breathtaking views of volcanic rocks, soft sand, and ancient petroglyphs from the Lihyanite and Dadanite periods. One of the highlights is the Lion Tombs of Dadan, a major tourist attraction. During winter, trekkers may encounter water pools and are advised to possess swimming skills or consult their travel agency for life jackets. Additionally, the Hidden Valley trek provides a unique experience, particularly at night when the starlight creates a magical ambiance amidst the canyons of the Arabian desert. The trek commences from Dunkin’, Unnamed Road 43541 Al Ula 43563, Saudi Arabia, which is approximately 55 km from Prince Abdul Majeed Bin Abdulaziz-Mogayla Airport. While the trail does not feature significant elevation gain, it is a lengthy trek. The main adventure trail is around 8 km, while the trek of the Hidden Valley is 4 km.

Wadi Al Disah

Wadi Al Disah, located in the northwestern Tabuk province of Saudi Arabia, is a stunning valley surrounded by palm trees. The area features sandstone cliffs, rock formations, and several freshwater springs, as well as archaeological sites from the Nabataean times. The trek to Wadi Al Disah, which starts from the town of Al Disah, has an elevation of 400 meters above sea level and is approximately 15 km long, suitable for both walking and 4x4 vehicles.

Jabal Al Soudah

Jabal Al Soudah, one of the tallest peaks in Saudi Arabia rising to 3133 meters, offers an exhilarating trekking trail with lush green juniper trees and breathtaking landscapes. The summit can be reached by experienced trekkers, providing enthralling views from a large walkway at the top. Situated in the Asir region, approximately 40 km from Abha, trekkers and tourists can easily access the Al Soudah region and begin the trek from the town. The elevation gain after reaching the summit is 1290 meters, and the total distance of the trail is 15.4 km due to frequent rises and falls along the way.
